River Conditions to Next Access Point:

Danger Class III Rapids The remains of the old Bowmanstown Dam lie about 0.3 mile downstream from this access point.   Safe passage is possible through a 35-foot-wide chute on RIVER RIGHT.  The river current will pull boats to the chute, which is where you want to be.   Even at low water levels, capsized boaters have been injured when caught in the broken part of the dam.  Avoid this area.  A steep rapid, present at low- and high-water levels, must be negotiated before the next access point.

Linkages:

  • Lehigh Canal Towpath: Owned by the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission, the trail extends north through Weissport to Jim Thorpe.  Parryville is the southern end of the existing towpath in this section of the Lehigh Navigation.  The towpath is part of the D & L Trail.

Access Point Orientation and Description:
The access point is on RIVER LEFT where the Lehigh Navigation canal, the Lehigh River, and the Pohopoco Creek meet.

Locating the Access Point from the River:
The access point is on RIVER LEFT.   The Pohopoco Creek joins the river about 800 feet downstream from the Pennsylvania Turnpike bridge.  The access point is actually in the Pohopoco Creek in a small eddy at its very end.

Directions to Access Parking/Unloading Area by Land:
From I-476 (Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike) take Exit 74.   Turn right onto Route 209 South and go 1.6 miles to the stop light at Route 248.   Turn left onto Route 248 East and go 1.5 miles to the access area, which is on the right.   Look for a sign that says “ Lehigh Canal Park.”

Access Point Location:
At the south (downstream) end of the parking area, take the grass/gravel path down the slope along the inland side of the canal.  Do not cross the foot bridge.  Instead, continue on the path to the downstream end of the lock to where the Pohopoco Creek enters the river.  Put in at the small eddy at the very end of the Pohopoco Creek.

User Facilities:

  • No restroom facilities
  • Parking for 5+ vehicles
  • Walking and biking along the Lehigh Navigation towpath
  • Interesting canal and lock remnants
  • Fishing in season

Ownership and Maintenance:

  • Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission

Present Use and Condition:

  • A small park has been established by the Lehigh Canal Recreation Commission.  It is marked by a Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor identification sign at the parking area.
  • Water releases from the Beltsville Dam make the Pohopoco Creek and Lehigh River confluence a popular whitewater-kayaking spot.  Be aware that water levels fluctuate throughout the year.
