Conditions to Next Access Point:
This is a fast-moving section of river. Just downstream
of the access point is a Class II rapid featuring a large rock on
RIVER RIGHT in the turn in the river.
Linkages:
- Switchback Railroad Trail: A
15-mile rail-trail extends from Summit Hill to Jim Thorpe.
- Mauch Chunk Lake Park: This county
park features camping, boating, swimming, picnic facilities, and
trails. Follow the Switchback Railroad Trail to the park.
- Downtown
Jim Thorpe: Amenities include restaurants, outfitters, bed
& breakfasts, hotel, shops, cafes, and museums.
- Historical attractions: Several
attractions can be found within walking distance, such as the
Asa Packer Mansion, Carbon County Jail, Mauch Chunk Landing, museums,
and canal locks.

Access Point Orientation and Description:
The access point is a large, open,
pebbled beach on RIVER RIGHT.
Locating the Access Point from the River:
The access point is on RIVER RIGHT
0.3 mile past the Route 903 (automobile) bridge. Just past
the bridge the river bends to the right. Around the bend
on the right is a large, open, pebbled beach. At the upper
end of the beach, away from the river, look for a dirt road leading
up to the right to the parking area. The town of Jim Thorpe
is on the hill above the beach.
Directions to Access Parking/Unloading Area by Land:
From
I-476 (Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike) take
Exit 74. Turn right onto Route 209 South and go 5.8 miles
to the center of Jim Thorpe and the Carbon County Court House
parking lot which is just past the Jim Thorpe Railroad Station
(Mauch Chunk Landing) on your right. Turn right into the
large parking lot, then turn left in the lot and go 300 yards
to the gated dirt road on the right which will lead down to the
access point.
Access Point Location:
A gated dirt road takes you from the
parking area down to the river's edge (about 75 yards).
The gate is usually closed, but you can carry around it to the
access point.

access is for non-motorized boating. The riverside is a
wide strip of sand and pebbles. A $3.00 fee is charged for
parking.
