Land Acquisition

Wildlands Conservancy actively seeks to acquire (through donation, bargain sale, or purchase) land that contains endangered plants and animals, prime agricultural soils, scenic vistas, or in order to provide recreational activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, and more. Additionally, we strive to protect land along rivers, streams, and other bodies of water. We either maintain these lands ourselves or transfer them to organizations better-equipped to maintain them.

The Conservancy currently owns and maintains the South Mountain Preserve, Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, Reimert Preserves, Burkhart Preserves, and Buehler Preserves.

South Mountain Preserve
South Mountain Preserve mountain bikerThe South Mountain Preserve encompasses 305.69-acres of maturing, second-growth forest located on the South Mountain ridge line in Lehigh County. Wildlands Conservancy began acquiring property in 1976, and in recent years, has added many smaller tracts, to form its current South Mountain Preserve.  Wildlands Conservancy's South Mountain Preserve is part of the larger Robert Rodale Reserve, totaling more than 750-acres.  The South Mountain Preserve is home to rare or threatened plant species, is prime breeding habitat for amphibians, like the spotted salamander, and is nesting habitat for more than 59 species of birds.  In addition, the property is a significant passive and active recreational area.

Pool Wildlife Sanctuary
Pool Wildlife Sanctuary wildlifeThe 72-acre Pool Wildlife Sanctuary was a gift by bequest in 1975 from the late Leonard Parker Pool, founder of Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., to Wildlands Conservancy. Located in Salisbury Township, Lehigh County, the Little Lehigh Creek runs adjacent to the sanctuary on three sides. The sanctuary features a watershed display center, an environmental education center, a pavilion, many nature trails, a bird blind, wildlife habitat, and an arboretum.

Reimert Preserves, Burkhart Preserves and Buehler Preserves
Through generous, private donations since 1973, Wildlands Conservancy has acquired the 11-acre Reimert, 26-acre Burkhart, and 38-acre Buehler properties. These three properties are located in Lehigh County and serve as preserves by maintaining open space, providing wildlife habitat, and offering passive recreational opportunities.

We, at the Conservancy, thank all of the generous landowners who donated lands to the Conservancy, thus protecting them for present and future generations.
