General Information Regarding Programs: 

All programs will be held at the Environmental Enrichment Education Center at Pool Wildlife Sanctuary in Emmaus, Pa., unless otherwise specified.  Your place is reserved only when payment is received.  No written confirmation will be sent, but you will be contacted if class status changes.  Register your child for age-appropriate classes only.  No refunds will be issued for under-age children removed from a class at the discretion of the instructor.  Checks are held until approximately two weeks prior to class.

YOU & ME

9:30-11:00 a.m.

This program for 3-4-year-olds and their caretakers focuses on simple but engaging activities that encourage exploration of the natural world. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12 per adult/child team.

FEBRUARY 16 - WINTER WINGS

Thursday

Have your photo taken with one of our menagerie owls before taking a hike in search of birds of winter along the trails at PWS. After our hike, we'll put that photo into an owl picture frame you'll make together. Register by 2/10/06.

 

MARCH 15 - GREEN HAIR BEAR

Wednesday

The cutest little bear with a great big head of bright green shamrock hair is waiting to go home with you just in time for St. Patrick's Day! But first we're going to trek across PWS is search of Mother Nature's surprising signs of spring. Register by 3/10/06.

 

APRIL 13 - STINKY'S BIG SURPRISE

Thursday

Hip-hip-hooray, it's time to celebrate Stinky the Skunk's third birthday! Before he eats the green bean candles on his carrot cake, Stinky will have a Big Surprise for you! Register by 4/7/06.

 

MAY 17 - A CHILDREN'S GARDEN

Wednesday

We're going to plant a sensory garden filled with color, scent, and sound. You will have some plants to take home to create a garden of your own as a reminder to come back to our children's garden again and again. Register by 5/12/06.

FEBRUARY 14 - ARE YOU ONE OF MINE, VALENTINE?

Tuesday, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Mammals often rely on group scent to identify the members of their community. Participants in this program will learn all about scent, scent marking, and the importance of pheromones. They'll also make a lightly scented surprise for the alpha-female of their pack. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12. Register by 2/10/06. ##

 

MARCH 14 - SIGNS OF SOMETHING BIG

Tuesday, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Did some really little guys in funny looking shoes hide signs of something big that's going to be happening soon in the forest at PWS? Does it involve treasure? Your 5-7-year-old will find out what happens when Irish leprechauns meet the Pennsylvania Dutch during this wild and crazy search for approaching spring. Everyone goes home with a gold pot full of shamrocks. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12. Register by 3/10/06. ##

 

APRIL 11 - STINKY'S BIRTHDAY PARTY

Tuesday, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Stinky the Skunk is going to be three years old and we're having a party to celebrate! We'll make Stinky party hats, have cake and ice cream, play Pin the Tail on Stinky and just go skunk crazy! After we sing "Happy Birthday" to our favorite little mustelid, he'll be giving gifts to all of his party guests. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12. Register by 4/7/06. ##

 

MAY 9 - FLUTTER BY BUTTERFLY GARDEN

Tuesday, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Butterflies make most of us smile. Plant a butterfly garden and encourage their presence by providing food, shelter, and sources of water and minerals. Everyone will go home with some butterfly-attracting plants and a hand-made watering saucer. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12. Register by 5/2/06. ##

MARCH 17 - BOWLING FOR LEPRECHAUNS

Friday, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

This program is really about predator-prey relationships and the effect of dramatic weather events on animal life cycles, but its St. Patrick's Day. You can't celebrate St. Patrick's Day without leprechauns, pots of gold, and lots of fun, sooo.we're going bowling for leprechauns! We'll still learn about the other stuff, but everyone will also go home with a leprechaun bowling set. Of course, we'll have to bowl over a few leprechauns before we leave. Bring a six-pack of empty sports drink bottles. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12. Register by 3/13/06. ##

 

APRIL 18 - CRACK'D

Tuesday, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

What happens when you combine raw eggs, some recyclables, a rubber catapult, and a group of 8-10-year-olds? You have fun, and lots of it! Every participant gets a raw egg to catapult over 50 yards in the air. The object is to provide a happy ending when it lands. They'll create a flight capsule from items in a bin of recyclable materials and hope for the best. For an extra bit of fun, our participants will also have an opportunity to get rid of left over Easter eggs when we have target practice at our catapult range! Fee: M-$10/NM-$12. APRIL 25 - HEADS UP

Tuesday, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

What goes up must come down. We've all heard that old adage, but how does some of that stuff get up there in the first place? We'll find out a little more about unusual meteorological events before creating a great head-gear game that demonstrates the importance of controlling what we're putting up and how we're getting it down. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12. Register by 4/21/06. ##

 

MAY 23 - WHO REALLY KNOWS A BUTTERFLY?

Tuesday, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

Butterflies have two personalities. They are beautiful delicate insects that gracefully flutter from blossom to blossom. They are also incredible hardy endurance champions that play in the mud and siphon juices from decaying carcasses. We'll find out how much we really know about butterflies during this lighthearted look at all things with scaled wings. Participants will finish planting the children's butterfly garden and go home with butterfly attracting plants. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12. Register by 5/17/06. ##

MARCH 4-WALKING ON AIR

Saturday, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

We're going to walk on air at the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve. Actually, we're going to walk on the air that's trapped in the snow pack when we snowshoe off the beaten track in search of winter wildlife. Snowshoeing is almost as easy as walking; it's just much more fun. We'll provide the snowshoes, hot cocoa, and a snack. Bring a bagged lunch. Meet in the main parking lot at the entrance to the Lehigh Valley Zoo. Fee: $45. Register by 2/22/06. ##

FEBRUARY 4 - WHISTLE PIG WILD WINTER SCAVENGER SCRAMBLE

Saturday, 1:00 p.m.

The groundhog will have already made his forecast, and whether or not we like his prediction, we're going to celebrate all that is "whistle pig" with a silly family scavenger hunt. While searching for items and deciphering clues, we'll learn all about the "grundsow" and his wily ways. Everybody wins, nobody loses, and we'll have lots of fun. Prizes for everyone! Fee: M-$7/NM-$9/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $3 each. Register by 2/1/06.

 

MARCH 10 - FRIDAY NIGHT OUT - MARCH PENGUIN MADNESS

Friday, 7:00 p.m.

People have been known to behave or imagine bizarre things when trying to break the tension of inactivity due to winter weather. Overcome by this cabin fever or March madness, they might even imagine they see - penguins racing downhill on ice-cube sleds! Why not spare your psyche, skip the preliminary stress, and just join us for the penguin races. After cheering on the chubby little racers, you could stay to view the wonderful film, March of the Penguins . Any child wearing his or her pajamas gets a special prize. Fee: M-$6/NM-$8/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $3 each. Register by 3/8/06.

 

APRIL 7 - FRIDAY NIGHT OUT - PEEPER HIKE A

Friday, 7:00 p.m.

Each spring, South Mountain rings with the chorus of hundreds of hard-to-locate spring peepers. Increase your chances of spotting one of these elusive little vocalists by joining our naturalists on a trek to the normally off-limit breeding pools. This program meets at the Alpine Street entrance to South Mountain Preserve. For adults and families with children over 5-years-old. Wear waterproof shoes and bring a flashlight. Fee: M-$7/NM-$9/Each registered adult may bring one child free; additional children are $3 each. Register by 4/5/06.

 

APRIL 8 - EGGS-TRAVA-GONZO

Saturday, 2:00 p.m.

Some of the wackiest eggs imaginable are hidden beside the trails at PWS. Prizes and surprises abound during this hopping good time that is a zany play-on the traditional egg hunt. This program has become a seasonal favorite, so enroll early. Fee: M-$8/NM-$10. Each adult may bring one child free; additional children are $4 each. Register by 4/3/06.

 

APRIL 21 - FRIDAY NIGHT OUT- PEEPER HIKE B

Friday, 7:00 p.m.

MAY 6 - BIRDING WITH BOB

Saturday, 8:00 a.m.

Local birder extraordinaire, Bob Good, will lead this hike in search of the birds of spring at Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve. This should be prime time for warblers, so the group will travel along the stream corridor. Wear sturdy footwear and meet at the main parking area near the entrance to the Lehigh Valley Zoo. For adults only. Fee: M-$6/NM-$8. Register by 5/3/06.

 

MAY 12 - FRIDAY NIGHT OUT - MOM'S FULL MOON FROGALICIOUS FROLIC AND A MOVIE

Friday, 7:00 p.m.

Treat mom to a family frog-hike adventure followed by a one-of-a-kind dessert buffet featuring some truly outrageous, but "toadally frogalicious" confections. All moms attending receive a memorable gift. We'll also show the reel-to-reel film, Secrets of the Underwater World. Fee: M-$7/NM-$9/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $4 each. Register by 5/10/06.

 

JUNE 17 - A DAY IN THE PINE BARRENS

Saturday, 8:00 a.m.

Join us for a daytrip to the New Jersey Pine Barrens, home to river otters, egrets, and carnivorous plants. We'll caravan from PWS. Water/other beverages are included, bring a lunch from home. Fee: $10/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $5 each. Register by 6/12/06.

 

JUNE 30 - FRIDAY NIGHT OUT - NIGHT SHIFT AND CAMPING

Friday, 7:00 p.m.

When the sun goes down, things change. Familiar daytime colors fade to gray, smells seem stronger, and every sound has an edge as your senses sharpen. Night creatures emerge and diurnal animals seek secure shelter. It's a different world out there and we want to share it with you while hiking to some of the lesser traveled areas of PWS. Afterwards, we'll settle in for camping under the stars with an old-fashioned campfire sing-a-long. We will provide tents, a snack made over a campfire, and breakfast in the morning. You'll need bedding and a flashlight. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $5 each. Register by 6/28/06.

 

JULY 16 - TUBING

Sunday, 2:00-5:00 p.m.

Spend the hot, hot afternoon floating down the cool, cool Little Lehigh Creek.

Fee: M-$5/NM-$6/Children under 13 are $3 each. Register by 7/14/06.

 

JULY 21 - FRIDAY NIGHT OUT - NIGHTFALL AT THE WATER'S EDGE

Friday, 7:00 p.m.

Join us to observe the action along the stream's edge as night falls over the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve. Who knows what we'll see, perhaps a raccoon, deer, or even a coyote. Afterwards, we'll roast marshmallows and listen for owls. Fee: M-$7/NM-$9/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $3 each. Register by 7/19/06.

 

JULY 28 - FRIDAY NIGHT OUT - COCKROACH RACES AND A MOVIE

Friday, 7:00 p.m.

With their heavily armored exoskeletons and loud hisses, the Madagascar hissing cockroaches in the colony at PWS amaze visitors. Last summer, we accidentally discovered they are also really fast, although erratic, racers; cockroach races became a favorite summer camp activity. This summer, we thought we'd share the fun and offer a family roach derby. After the races, we'll watch the old films I Know An Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly and The World Is Born. Fee: M-$6/NM-$8/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $3 each. Register by 7/26/06.

 

AUGUST 12-13 - CAMPFIRES AND SHOOTING STARS

Saturday, 7:00 p.m.-Sunday, 10:00 a.m.

We're camping out at the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve to watch the stars fall from the sky during the Perseid meteor shower, Mother Nature's grandest annual celestial fireworks show. Over 60 "shooting stars" an hour are possible, and our location promises to be a prime viewing area. We will provide tents, a snack made over a late night campfire, and breakfast. You'll need bedding and a flashlight. Meet in the main parking lot outside the entrance to the Lehigh Valley Zoo. Advance registration required. Fee: M-$10/NM-$12/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $5 each.

 

AUGUST 20 - TUBING

Sunday, 2:00-5:00 p.m.

Spend the hot, hot afternoon floating down the cool, cool Little Lehigh Creek.

AUGUST 25 - FRIDAY NIGHT OUT - CAMPING AND A MOVIE

Friday- Camping program begins 7:00 p.m., movies only at 8:00 p.m.

Say goodbye to summer with one final movie and camping night. Tonight's features are the great Disney classics Stronghold of the Eagle and Peter and the Wolf . Fee: M-$10/NM-$12/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $5 each. Movie only: M-$2/NM-$3/Each registered adult may bring one child under 13 free; additional children are $1 each. Any family with a child who attended a PWS summer program may view the movie at no cost. Register by 8/23/06.

Bike and Boat Adventures

STANDARD TRIPS

Experience the beauty of the Lehigh River during this 4-mile canoe trip from Canal Park in Allentown to Sand Island in Bethlehem . Canoeing is followed by a bicycle trip back to Allentown along the historic Lehigh Navigation Canal towpath. Bikes, helmets, canoes, paddles, PFDs, and basic canoe instruction will be provided. Bring your own refreshments. Trip is rain or shine. Fee: $25/Small children sharing canoe space are free. Advance registration is required.

EXTENDED TRIPS

An 11-mile canoe-only trip from Allentown to the Route 33 boat launch. This paddle includes more "riffle" areas and an impressive passage alongside the hulking ruins of the old Bethlehem Steel furnaces. Transportation back to Allentown will be provided. Bring a waterproofed lunch. For adults and children over 10 years old. Fee: $35. Advance registration is required.

GO WILD SUMMER CAMPS

Whether they are exploring the woods, catching tadpoles in the ponds, or canoeing in the creek, our campers are always busy and having fun!  Our programs are designed to help children develop an appreciation for nature, and many also provide an opportunity to develop lifelong recreational skills.  Let your child Go Wild with Wildlands Conservancy this summer and we promise they'll have experiences that will be remembered for a lifetime!

 

Wildlands Conservancy summer-camp programs offer a wide variety of activities for children of all ages.  You are also able to select varied times from the following available schedules:

 

Session A - 9-11 a.m.  Fee: M-$55/NM-$65 individual or adult/child team.

Session B - 9 a.m.-12 p.m.  Fee: M-$80/NM-$95

Session C - 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.  Fee/session: M-$235/NM-$280.  Beverages and snacks will be provided.  Please send a non-perishable lunch from home.

Session D - 12:30-5:30 p.m.  Fee/session: M-$135/NM-$160.  Beverages and snacks will be provided.

 

Please note the session desired on your enrollment form.   Every week will be different, so your child will have a new experience each time he/she attends.  All programs are at Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, unless noted.

A special camp session with focus on low-impact hiking, backpacking, and camping activities.  After learning Leave No Trace techniques, participants will explore a surprise location.  Thursday's morning session will be followed by an overnight camping trip that begins at 7:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning. The 8-10-year-olds will spend the night at PWS.  The 11-16-year-old campers will spend the night at the Trexler-Lehigh County Game Preserve.  Register by 7/10/06.  Fee: M-$135/NM-$150.  ##

WEIRD CAMP

The most wonderful thing about the natural world is how weird it can be.  Turtles that can breathe through their butts and critters that can function without their heads are just a few of the oddities that will be covered during this program with sessions for 8-10- and 11-13-year-olds.  Register by 7/24/06.  ##

OUT AND ABOUT

Session C Only.

Participants will explore eastern Pennsylvania via backpacking, biking, canoeing, and rafting trips.  They will bike through history on a ride down the beautiful Lehigh Gorge from White Haven to Glen Onoko; search out prehistoric pathways during a hike/fossil hunt through Swatara Gap; follow turtle trails as they canoe/tube Mauch Chunk Lake ; and experience the thrill of whitewater on a rafting trip down the upper Delaware River .  For 12-16-year-olds.  Fee: M-$350/NM-$375.  ##

CANOE CAMPS

Once learned, canoeing is a lifetime recreational pursuit that can offer many levels of physical activity, from strenuous whitewater challenges to relaxed slack-water wildlife observation.  Canoe camps are for 12-16-year-olds.

Monday is spent at PWS developing canoeing skills.  Tuesday brings a canoe trip along the shoreline of Lake Minsi .  Wednesday will be spent on the Lehigh River exploring the river islands in between Allentown and Bethlehem .  The week ends with a canoe trip from Allentown to Freemansburg, with an overnight campout on Freemans Island .  We will provide canoes, safety equipment, trained guides, tents, and food for the overnight trip.  Fee:  M-$310/NM-$335.  ##

ADVANCED CANOE CAMP

8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 7:00 a.m. Thursday-5:00 p.m. Friday

Only open to participants from previous Canoe Camps or those with proven canoeing skills.   A step up from Basic Canoe Camp.  Monday on the Lehigh River from Bethlehem to Easton .  Tuesday at F.E. Walter.  Wednesday canoeing on the Upper Lehigh .  Thursday/Friday will be spent canoeing/camping on the Delaware River .  Fee: M-$390/NM-$420.  ##
