Tributary to Monocacy Creek Stream Restoration Project

In July 2000, Wildlands Conservancy completed the "Tributary to Monocacy Creek Stream Restoration Project." The project was funded by a $17,959.00 "Watershed Restoration and Assistance Program" grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. Additional financial, technical, and volunteer support was also provided by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, the Borough of Bath, Hilltop Excavating, Inc., Keystone Cement Company, Monocacy Creek Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Northampton Area High School, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Rodale Press, Inc. The project site was listed as a high priority remediation site within Wildlands Conservancy's Monocacy Creek Rivers Conservation Management Plan. The project is 745 feet in length and is located within Keystone Park in the Borough of Bath, Northampton County. The scope of the project included the removal of gabion baskets, the placement of grade control devices - cross-vane rock weir - and the grading and vegetative stabilization of eroded stream banks using soil bioengineering techniques - bio-degradable coir log and bio-degradable erosion control blanket. The project also included the planting of 185 trees, 545 shrubs and 1,600 herbaceous plugs to establish a native riparian forest buffer approximately 37,250 square feet (.85 acres) in area. The objectives of this project were to improve the water quality, reduce non-point source pollution and improve aquatic and wildlife habitat within and along the tributary. The project also demonstrates the implementation of "Best Management Practices" by a municipality within a public park context.
