Little Lehigh Creek Watershed

Little Lehigh Stream Bank Fencing, Habitat Improvement and Riparian Buffer Improvement Project

Before
After

In July 2001, Wildlands Conservancy implemented the "Little Lehigh Stream Bank Fencing, Habitat Improvement and Riparian Buffer Project." Funding for this project ($16,101.35) has been provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's "Environmental Stewardship Fund" (Growing Greener Initiative). Additional financial, technical, and volunteer support was also provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture (Natural Resource Conservation Service), Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Ducks Unlimited, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, the City of Allentown, Moravian College and the Little Lehigh Chapter of Trout Unlimited. The project site is 2,550 feet in length and is located on the property of Mr. and Mrs. Larry E. and Linda G. Moyer (Brookvue Farms) in Lower Macungie Township, Lehigh County and Longswamp Township, Berks County. The project scope included the placement of stream bank fencing/agricultural stream crossings, fish habitat improvement structures - root wads, single-log deflectors and log-faced stone deflectors - and the planting of a riparian buffer. The primary ecological objectives of this project are to improve the water quality, reduce non-point source pollution and improve aquatic and wildlife habitat within and along the Little Lehigh Creek. The project will also provide education, enhanced recreational opportunities and improved aesthetics. The project also demonstrates the implementation of "Best Management Practices" within an agricultural setting.
