In March 2000 Wildlands Conservancy
received $ 50,000.00 from the United States Army Corps
of Engineers to implement a habitat improvement and
riparian buffer project on the Cedar Creek in South
Whitehall Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The
project, approximately 2,100 feet in length, was llocated
in Haines Mill Park, which is owned and maintained by
Lehigh County. The primary ecological objectives of
the project were to improve water quality, reduce non-point
source pollution, reduce stream bank erosion, and improve
aquatic and wildlife habitat within and along the Cedar
Creek.
The project scope included the
installation of numerous habitat improvement structures
- single-log
deflectors, root
wads, log-faced
stone deflectors, stone deflectors - as well as
grade control devices -
cross vane rock weir - and the planting of a riparian
buffer. The project also provided educational and
recreational opportunities and improved aesthetics throughout
the entire park. This project serves as an example to
other municipalities and government entities as to the
proper application of "Best
Management Practices" and stream restoration
techniques throughout a park setting. This project was
implemented in the spring of 2002 with the assistance
of numerous project partners and volunteers.
