Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Growing Greener Initiative

The Alliance for the Little Lehigh Watershed (ALLW)

The objective of this project is to establish a watershed alliance focused on the protection, preservation and enhancement of the Little Lehigh Creek. The Alliance for the Little Lehigh Watershed's mission will is to preserve, enhance and protect the environmental health of the Little Lehigh Creek watershed, through water quality monitoring, education, restoration and the formation of broad based partnerships. These partnerships will be comprised of local and state governments, educational institutions, organizations, corporations, special interest groups and private citizens committed to identifying, and understanding, the complex interactions that effect the quality of the Little Lehigh Creek.

The creation of the Alliance for the Little Lehigh Watershed was a recommendation listed within Watershed Assessment, a source water protection assessment prepared by the Cadmus Group Inc., in 1998. This assessment was completed as one of the pilot projects of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Source Water Protection Program. After completion of the project, several municipalities and interest groups within the watershed began to meet in order to implement the recommendations listed within the study.

Wildlands Conservancy will play an active role in the formation of the Alliance for the Little Lehigh Watershed. Throughout its 27-year existence, Wildlands Conservancy has facilitated the establishment of several watershed organizations, and will rely on such experiences to aid in the establishment of this needed group. A core group of municipalities, under the leadership of the city of Allentown, will participate in the formation and duties of the association.
